As a result of Pennsylvania’s electric utility restructuring law, PECO no longer produces electricity. Electric power generation is sold in a separate, competitive wholesale market. As part of the restructuring, PECO’s customers have benefited from capped electric generation rates since 1996. Since then wholesale market power prices have risen, driven by increasing fuel costs and global competition.
When the electric generation rate caps expire for PECO customers on January 1, 2011, the company will be required to buy power on the wholesale market at prices that are expected to be higher than today’s capped rates. PECO will provide this electricity to customers at no additional markup.
What is Electric Choice:
The Electric Choice Program was developed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) and the state's electric distribution companies. In 1999, the program gave PECO's electric customers the opportunity to choose the company that supplies their electricity. As of January 2000, most PECO electric customers can choose an alternate electric generation supplier. However, you do not have to choose a supplier
The Electric Choice Program is a one-step process: supplier selection. Regardless of the option you choose, PECO will continue to provide your business with safe and reliable electric delivery and quality customer service, as we have done throughout the region for more than 100 years.
