The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others illuminated the need for a renewed focus on systemic racism and racial inequities in our society. Coupled with the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in diverse communities, it was clear the time had come for meaningful action to support our employees, customers, and the communities we serve.
A diverse team of PECO leaders leveraged their influence and platforms to enact change and conduct a comprehensive assessment of racial equity across our organization — for the first time ever. Concurrently with Exelon's Racial Equity Task Force, PECO established the Racial Equity Initiative with a goal to build an environment that promotes and encourages efforts, actions, and behaviors to advance principles of racial equity.
Initially designed to address inequities faced by African Americans, the group grew to address the disparities felt by all minorities. The team identified workstreams to focus on specific areas to make positive, intentional, demonstrable, and sustainable change at PECO and in the diverse communities we serve.
Through the workstreams’ efforts, PECO reaffirms its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and in the region, works to solve issues related to injustice in our communities, and seeks opportunities to make meaningful change to be part of the solution.
