At PECO we actively pursue every opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. PECO's many climate initiatives support Exelon 2020, A Low Carbon Roadmap, which is a comprehensive, ambitious, industry-leading strategy developed by Exelon, PECO's parent company.
The goal of Exelon 2020 is to reduce, offset, or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emitted by its family of companies and customers. This is an amount greater than Exelon’s current annual level of emissions and is the equivalent to taking three million cars off the road for a year. This effort includes an Exelon-wide assessment of buildings – including PECO facilities – to reduce energy consumption by at least 25 percent during the next five years.
PECO has reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by more than 54 percent since 2001 through various programs including:
- Energy reduction efforts including the Leadership in Environmental and Engineering Design (LEED) program.
- Fleet of environmentally friendly vehicles.
- Enhanced recycling efforts.
- Programs to reduce GHG emissions from electrical equipment and gas distribution system.
