New Underground Mechanics Join PECO’s Field Force

Ten underground apprentice mechanics graduate from comprehensive 15-week training program

PHILADELPHIA (June 4, 2015) – PECO welcomed 10 new underground apprentice mechanics to the company’s field force today as they celebrated the completion of a rigorous 15-week training program. Underground school instructors and members of PECO leadership joined the graduates and their families to congratulate the company’s newest field employees on this significant professional accomplishment. These new mechanics will join the utility’s front lines in working to ensure safe and reliable electric service for PECO customers.

PECO’s comprehensive underground training program develops the fundamental skills new apprentice mechanics need to work safely on the company’s electric distribution system. More than 700 people applied for this year’s program and the final candidates were selected after a series of interviews and physical fitness assessments.

“PECO’s culture is built around safety, high performance, resilience and continuous improvement,” said Eric Helt, vice president of Electric Operations. “Our field employees are critical to the reliable delivery of electric service to our customers, and I am honored to welcome our new apprentice mechanics to the organization.”

PECO’s Methods and Training department develops the curriculum for the underground training program, and seasoned underground mechanics instruct and oversee the candidates’ field work.

This year’s program included enhanced simulations to provide candidates with real-life conditions that may be encountered on the jobsite. In addition to field maintenance and repair skills, the program focuses on electric distribution fundamentals, including electric theory, circuit design, emergency response, safety and first aid.
