PHILADELPHIA (August 6, 2015) – PECO has recently completed construction of a new $36 million electric distribution substation to help ensure reliable service for more than 10,000 customers in North Philadelphia.

The project, which began in late 2013, also included the expansion of PECO’s local electric system with five new 13-kilovolt (kV) circuits to support growth in the North Philadelphia area surrounding Temple University.

“Each year, PECO invests hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure projects to provide customers with safe and reliable service,” said John McDonald, vice president of Technical Services. “This project is another significant investment designed to enhance our electric system and meet the needs of our customers in Philadelphia.”

Electric distribution substations convert high voltage electricity from transmission lines into lower voltages for delivery to homes and businesses. As part of the project, PECO also installed new electrical equipment, including two new transformers and a structure to house necessary substation equipment.

PECO serves approximately 695,000 customers in Philadelphia County.
