PECO Celebrates Gas Workers on Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day

PHILADELPHIA (March 18, 2019) – In celebration of Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day, PECO honors the employees who work day in and day out to serve more than 523,000 natural gas customers throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. These men and women respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on weekends and holidays, and in challenging conditions to keep natural gas flowing for customers. The company's crews safely inspect and maintain approximately 13,000 miles of natural gas transmission, distribution and service lines.

"Our natural gas employees work tirelessly to provide safe and reliable service to our customers," said Ron Bradley, vice president of Gas Operations. "We are truly appreciative and thankful for their unwavering commitment, no matter what challenges they may face."

Already, both 2018 and 2019 have been record-breaking years for PECO's natural gas service. Last winter, PECO met record-breaking customer demand for natural gas on a single day, when demand on January 6, 2018 totaled 804,372 thousand cubic feet (Mcf), breaking 800,000 Mcf in one day for the first time ever. This year, on Martin Luther King Day, customer demand for natural gas totaled 782,361 thousand cubic feet (Mcf), making the holiday the third largest natural gas delivery day in PECO's history.

Modernizing the natural gas delivery system is a core part of PECO's commitment to maintaining safe and reliable service for its customers and a focus for many of the company's employees. PECO invests more than $200 million each year in the company's natural gas system to provide safe and reliable service for customers. This work includes inspecting equipment, completing necessary equipment repairs or replacements, performing preventive maintenance work, and installing additional natural gas main and service lines to bring natural gas service to new customers. The money spent on modernization and maintenance efforts continues to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety for customers.

Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel and remains one of the most affordable home-heating fuels, making it one of the most desirable. Its popularity continues to grow and over the last five years PECO has added more than 20,000 new customers who now use the company's safe, clean, efficient and affordable natural gas service.

This is the fourth year Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day is being celebrated across the country. This nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work done by the employees of natural gas utilities.

PECO joins the American Gas Association and natural gas utility companies across the nation, including Exelon sister companies BGE in Baltimore and Delmarva Power in Delaware, in honoring natural gas workers.
