PHILADELPHIA (March 11, 2016) – As part of PECO’s ongoing efforts to provide customers with safe, reliable, affordable and clean natural gas service, the company is investing more than $14 million this year to enhance the local natural gas distribution system in Lower Merion Township and Narberth Borough in Montgomery County.
This work, which began in late February and will continue through the rest of the year, is part of a multi-year plan to modernize PECO’s natural gas system.
Projects include replacing existing natural gas main and bare steel natural gas service lines with new plastic pipe, which enhances safety, is more durable and improves service reliability.
Crews will be working in the following areas:
PECO will work to minimize the impact on area traffic and our customers, and will coordinate work with any planned township, borough or other utility projects.
“We continuously review our natural gas distribution system to identify opportunities to further improve service and enhance safety,” said Ron Bradley, vice president of Gas Operations. “This work ensures we can continue to provide safe, reliable natural gas service to our customers.”
These projects are part of more than $100 million in capital investments that PECO is making to its natural gas system this year. This includes inspecting equipment, completing necessary repairs or replacements, performing preventive maintenance work, and installing additional natural gas main and service lines to bring natural gas service to new customers.
The company maintains a rigorous maintenance and inspection program to ensure safe and reliable service for more than 511,000 natural gas customers. PECO operates and maintains more than 12,000 miles of natural gas distribution and service lines, and 30 miles of natural gas transportation lines in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Lancaster counties.
For customers not currently using natural gas, new programs and incentives are available to help make the switch more affordable. Customers continue to save money due to lower natural gas prices. Today, average customers are paying about 50 percent less for natural gas than they did in 2008.
